Quick answer
Certified refurbished robot mowers can save money, but the warranty is much shorter than new: Ecovacs’s certified refurbished mowers get 3 months of cover, versus 12 for new units, and Amazon Renewed carries a 90-day guarantee. Buying used privately (Facebook Marketplace, eBay) is riskier because of a modern anti-theft feature that catches second-hand buyers out: many mowers lock to the original owner’s account, and Segway says a stolen Navimow “is worthless to anyone, as it is tied to a specific account.” Before buying any used mower, confirm the previous owner has released it, that the dock and RTK antenna are included, and that the battery is under about 4 years old. Ask for a live demo.
Robot mowers are expensive new. That makes the refurbished market tempting, and there are legitimate options if you know what you’re looking at. Ecovacs runs a certified refurbished program with a shortened warranty. Amazon Renewed lists refurbished mowers from multiple brands with a 90-day guarantee. eBay, Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist list units from private sellers, some perfectly fine, some with hidden problems.
This guide covers what a refurbished mower actually gives you, why account locks matter more than they used to, and what to check before you pay. MowReview quotes no prices and hasn’t tested any refurbished mowers. How we research explains why.

| Segway Navimow | No published refurbished tier |
| Worx | 3-year limited warranty on new tools “applies only to the original purchaser and may not be transferred” |

The account-lock problem: a modern catch for used buyers
The old mower may be locked to its old owner
Segway Navimow: “A stolen Navimow is worthless to anyone, as it is tied to a specific account and requires a charging station and other things to work.” That’s an anti-theft feature. For a legitimate resale, the previous owner has to release the mower from their account before you can pair it.
Husqvarna Automower: “To operate the robotic lawn mower, the correct PIN code must be entered. Your Automower® robotic lawn mower cannot be used without the PIN code.” Wired Automowers are also paired to the specific charging station; a different station won’t work. That’s important for used buyers: the mower and its station stay together.
Mammotion: Mammotion has a “Share Your Device” flow and account-based locking. The previous owner needs to unlink the mower from their account, or authorize you as a new owner, for it to work with your account.
What this means in practice: if a private seller can’t or won’t help you unlink the mower, you’re buying an expensive paperweight. Confirm the unlink process with the manufacturer’s support before paying, and ideally see the seller unlink it during a live demo.
What to check before buying used
- Charging dock included? Replacements aren’t cheap. If a dock is missing, the price should reflect the cost of ordering one plus the hassle.
- RTK antenna and cable included? Wire-free mowers need them, and they’re not always packaged together.
- Boundary wire and gauge, for wired mowers? Wire kits cost real money, but existing wire in the ground stays with the property.
- Battery age. Lithium-ion mower batteries typically hold strong performance for 2 to 4 years. Ask when the mower was bought and used. Replacement packs are available from most brands.
- Account status. Confirm the seller has released the mower from their account and knows the reset procedure.
- Firmware version. The mower should be running current firmware. Old firmware can prevent pairing with a new account.
- Blade wear. Blades are cheap to replace but hint at how heavily the mower has been used.
- Ask for a live demo. The mower should power on, pair with the app, and mow a short strip. Walk away if the seller won’t demonstrate it.
Warranty: what transfers and what doesn’t
- Worx: the 3-year limited warranty on new tools “applies only to the original purchaser and may not be transferred.” A used Worx has no manufacturer warranty.
- Ecovacs: covers the “original purchaser.” A private used unit has no transferred warranty.
- Segway Navimow: requires the “original purchase receipt” from an authorized Navimow dealer. Private resale falls outside.
- Mammotion: has a softer transfer process: if you aren’t the owner, you obtain authorization from the owner for warranty service.
- Husqvarna: Automower warranty is tied to the original purchase; a reconditioned unit from an authorized reseller has its own (shorter) terms.
The pattern is consistent: manufacturer warranties don’t transfer to private used buyers. What you get is what the seller can back up.
Battery: the biggest hidden cost
Battery health is the single most important thing to ask about on a used mower. Lithium-ion packs age in two ways:
- Calendar age. Battery University’s storage figures show that a lithium-ion battery kept fully charged loses capacity even sitting unused. At 77°F, a fully charged battery retains about 80% after a year; at 104°F, about 65%.
- Cycle age. Every discharge and recharge wears the battery a small amount. A robot mower cycles daily during the growing season.
A three-year-old mower that spent every summer in Arizona is not the same as a three-year-old mower that lived in Ohio. Ask about the mower’s location as well as its age. For heat effects, see robot mowers in extreme heat.
When refurbished makes sense
| Situation | Consider refurbished? |
|---|---|
| You want to try a robot mower without full new cost | Yes, from Ecovacs or Amazon Renewed |
| You want the latest features and multi-year warranty | No, buy new |
| You want an obsolete or discontinued model | Refurbished may be the only route |
| You want to save 20 to 30% and can accept 90-day warranty | Amazon Renewed is worth checking |
| You want to buy privately for the lowest price | Only if you can confirm the account is unlocked and see a live demo |
Safer alternatives
If a new mower is out of budget, three routes are often better than a private-sale used unit:
- Wait for a sale. Robot mowers discount at seasonal events. Our Black Friday guide, Presidents’ Day deals and best time to buy a robot mower cover the timing.
- Buy a smaller new model. The Navimow i-series and Worx Landroid Vision are cheaper than flagship models and cover smaller lawns.
- Buy manufacturer-refurbished. The 3-month Ecovacs warranty or 90-day Amazon Renewed guarantee is short but real, and both are much safer than a private sale.
Questions
Are refurbished robot mowers worth buying?
Sometimes. Certified refurbished models from an authorized seller can save money on a working mower, but warranties are usually shorter than new. Ecovacs, for example, covers new products for 12 months but certified refurbished for 3 months. Amazon Renewed items carry a 90-day guarantee.
Where can I buy a refurbished robot mower?
Ecovacs sells certified refurbished units with a shortened warranty. Amazon Renewed lists refurbished robot mowers from multiple brands with a 90-day guarantee. Mammotion refurbished mowers appear on eBay as eBay Refurbished, not through the Mammotion US store. We didn’t find a formal Husqvarna Certified Pre-Owned Automower program.
Do refurbished robot mowers come with a warranty?
A shorter one. Ecovacs certified refurbished is 3 months versus 12 months new. Amazon Renewed is 90 days regardless of brand. Buying used from a private seller may leave you with no warranty at all.
Can a stolen or account-locked mower be resold?
Usually not without help from the original owner. Segway says a stolen Navimow “is worthless to anyone, as it is tied to a specific account.” Husqvarna requires the correct PIN to operate; without it, the mower can’t be used. Mammotion has account-based locking. Buying used privately means confirming the seller has released the mower from their account.
What should I check before buying a used robot mower privately?
The charging dock is included (replacements are expensive), the RTK antenna is included for wire-free models, the battery age is under about 4 years, the mower is not account-locked to a previous owner, blade wear, and firmware version. Ask for a live demo before paying.
How long do robot mower batteries last?
Lithium-ion mower batteries typically hold strong performance for about 2 to 4 years. Replacement packs are available from most brands, and Battery University notes elevated temperatures shorten battery life. Ask about battery age on any used mower.
The short version
Certified refurbished from Ecovacs or Amazon Renewed carries a short warranty but genuine protection. Manufacturer warranties don’t transfer to private used buyers, so a Facebook Marketplace unit gives you no cover at all. The bigger risk is the account lock: Navimow, Husqvarna and Mammotion all tie the mower to the original account, and unless the previous owner releases it, you can’t use it. Check the dock, antenna, battery age and account status, and ask for a live demo.
New might not be as far away as you think.
Sales and smaller models often close the gap.
