Choosing a mower

Robot Mowers for Kentucky Bluegrass Lawns

Updated 8-minute read

Quick answer

Kentucky bluegrass suits a robot mower more easily than most grasses. Extension services put it at about 2.5 to 3.5 inches, with an extra half-inch in summer heat, and almost every popular robot mower’s range covers that. The three that don’t are the Navimow H-series (stops at 2.4 inches), the standard Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (2.7 inches) and the Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD (2.8 inches, which just about reaches spring height but not the summer target). The Navimow X3, the LUBA 3 AWD H version and the Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR are the strongest fits for a bluegrass lawn.

Kentucky bluegrass is the classic Northern lawn: the deep green, fine-textured turf that fills sod farms and suburban front yards from Ohio to Idaho and up into the Pacific Northwest. It’s what most people picture when they think of “grass,” and unlike tall fescue or the Southern warm-season grasses, it doesn’t demand anything unusual from a mower’s height range.

The catch is summer. Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass, and it goes semi-dormant in heat, which changes both your target height and your mowing schedule. This guide covers the height for the whole year and picks robot mowers that suit it. MowReview quotes no prices and hasn’t tested these mowers. How we research explains why.

The picks

LiDAR navigation under trees

Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR

  • Stated cutting height1.2 to 3.6 in
  • Stated coverageUp to about 3/4 acre
  • NavigationLiDAR, 3D ToF, AI camera

Kentucky bluegrass is often planted under Northeastern maples and oaks, and satellite signal there is often patchy. The GOAT A3000 LiDAR navigates by laser and doesn’t rely on RTK alone, which makes it a strong choice for a shaded lawn. Its 3.6-inch maximum covers Iowa State’s summer height with a whisker to spare.

Good for

  • Shaded or partly shaded bluegrass lawns
  • Lots up to about three-quarters of an acre

Less good for

  • Anyone who needs to reach 4 inches: it stops at 3.6
  • Overgrown lawns: PCWorld found it left clipping trails in moderately tall grass
  • Steep lots: stated max slope 50%

Summer: raise the cut, cut the schedule

Kentucky bluegrass is a cool-season grass, and Iowa State, the University of Maryland and the University of Minnesota all say to raise the cutting height about half an inch to an inch in summer heat and drought. On a bluegrass lawn:

  1. Add half an inch in June. Move a spring cut at 3 inches to a summer setting of 3.5, and a lawn cut at 2.5 to 3 inches.
  2. Stop mowing dormant turf. If the lawn turns brown from heat and drought, the University of Maryland says not to mow it. Pause the schedule until it greens up.
  3. Move to early morning or evening. Purdue recommends mowing in the early morning or early evening when it’s above 90°F.

Penn State also notes that summer disease pressure (leaf spot, dollar spot, summer patch) can hit bluegrass hard, and mowing higher helps by reducing stress. See robot mowers in extreme heat for the mower side.

Mixed lawns

Bluegrass is often sown as part of a mix. Penn State says it pairs well with perennial ryegrass and fine fescues, at similar heights, but is a poor mix with tall fescue because tall fescue’s coarser blades form visible clumps. For a bluegrass and tall fescue mix, follow the tall fescue range instead: see robot mowers for tall fescue. For a fine fescue mix or a shaded lawn, robot mowers for fine fescue lawns covers that.

Overseeding and new lawns

Bluegrass is often seeded or oversown in early fall. Extension guidance is to keep traffic off new seedlings for several weeks and to mow at the top of the height range for the first cuts. Park the robot mower during establishment. When can a robot mower go on new sod or a newly seeded lawn? covers the timing.

Questions

What height should a robot mower cut Kentucky bluegrass?

Extension services broadly agree on 2.5 to 3.5 inches. Purdue recommends 2 to 3.5 inches, Penn State 1.5 to 2.5 inches (going higher in heat), Iowa State 2.5 to 3.5 inches with 3 to 3.5 through summer, and the University of Minnesota 3 inches or higher year-round.

Which robot mowers suit Kentucky bluegrass?

Nearly all of them. Any US mower whose range covers 2.5 to 3.5 inches fits, including the Navimow X430, Navimow X3, Navimow i-series, Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR, Worx Landroid Vision, Dreame A3 AWD Pro, Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD H and YUKA mini H. The Navimow H-series stops at 2.4 inches, which is below every recommendation.

Should I raise the height in summer for Kentucky bluegrass?

Yes. Iowa State recommends 3 to 3.5 inches in summer, and Penn State says to mow at 2 inches or higher in heat. Kentucky bluegrass goes semi-dormant in extended heat and drought, and a taller cut protects the crowns and roots.

Can Kentucky bluegrass be mixed with tall fescue?

Penn State says Kentucky bluegrass pairs well with perennial ryegrass and fine fescues, but is a poor mix with tall fescue because tall fescue’s coarser blades form visible clumps. For a bluegrass and tall fescue mix, follow the tall fescue height range.

Do I need to stop mowing dormant bluegrass?

Yes. Kentucky bluegrass often goes semi-dormant in summer heat and drought, and mowing dormant, brown turf adds wear without helping. Pause the robot’s schedule and restart it when the lawn greens up.

How often should a robot mower run on Kentucky bluegrass?

Follow the one-third rule. In spring and fall the lawn grows fast, so a robot running every day or two suits it. In summer semi-dormancy, cut back to two or three sessions a week, and pause entirely if the lawn browns off.

The short version

Kentucky bluegrass is one of the easiest grasses to match to a robot mower, because its 2.5 to 3.5 inch target sits inside almost every popular model’s range. Only three come up short: the Navimow H-series, the standard LUBA 3 AWD and the Husqvarna 435X AWD (which just about handles spring). Raise the cut half an inch in July and August, pause the schedule if the lawn browns off, and stay off newly seeded areas for the first month.

Grass is one number. Size and slope are the others.

Check that a mower suits your lawn’s area and steepest slope too.
