Best Robot Mowers for Large Yards (1 Acre and Up)

Updated 7-minute read

Quick answer

For lawns of an acre or more, look at mowers rated above your measured grass area: the Segway Navimow X450 (1.5 acres), the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000 (1.25 acres) or the Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA (about 1.24 acres). If your lawn is near a mower’s limit, or split up by trees, buildings or a driveway, two smaller mowers can be the better answer.

Big lawns are where a robot mower can save the most time, and where choosing the wrong one costs the most. A mower that just about covers your acreage on paper may fall behind in a wet spring, lose its signal under the trees at the far end, or run out of charge before it reaches the back.

This guide covers the mowers rated for large lawns, the honest limits of mowing big properties with one machine, and when two make more sense. MowReview hasn’t tested these mowers. Figures come from manufacturers and named testers, and every pick includes a drawback.

Start with your real number

On a large property, the gap between lot size and lawn size can be huge. Woodland, a long driveway, outbuildings, a pond or a paddock you don’t mow all come off the total. Measure only the grass the mower will cut. Our guide on what size robot mower you need shows how, using a free satellite map.

Then treat every figure below as a best case. On a big lawn, the things that shrink real-world coverage multiply: more trees, more slope, more distance back to the charging station.

Best for big lawns with trees

Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 5000

  • Stated lawn size1.25 acres
  • Stated slope80% (39°)
  • NavigationLiDAR + network RTK + cameras

Large properties rarely have open sky everywhere. There’s usually a tree line, a barn or a corner in the shade. The LUBA 3 combines satellite positioning with laser scanning and cameras, so it has something to fall back on where the satellite signal weakens. Reviewers consistently rate its terrain handling among the best available.

Good for

  • Large lawns with scattered trees and outbuildings
  • Rough or hilly ground

Less good for

  • Easy setup: PCWorld found the app and setup weren’t always smooth
  • Pristine turf: one reviewer found its turning method scuffs grass
  • Local servicing if bought online: one reviewer notes Amazon and direct purchases are supported through the app, not dealers

Best with dealer installation and service

Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA

  • Stated lawn sizeAbout 1.24 acres (5,000 m²)
  • Stated slope45% to 50% (sources vary)
  • SetupBoundary wire, or EPOS satellite kit (extra)

On a big property, professional installation and a local service contact can be worth more than any feature. Husqvarna sells mainly through dealers who can install and look after the mower. The 450X NERA can run on a boundary wire or wire-free with the EPOS plug-in kit, and Husqvarna’s app lets you create separate work areas and temporary stay-out zones.

Good for

  • Large, mostly gentle lawns
  • Buyers who want installation and service handled locally

Less good for

  • Steep ground: its slope rating is well below the all-wheel-drive mowers
  • Going wire-free without extra cost: the EPOS kit is sold separately

When one mower is enough, and when it isn’t

One mower usually works when your grass is comfortably below its rating, mostly open to the sky, and connected, so the mower can drive from one area to the next without crossing gravel, a busy driveway or a narrow gate.

Two mowers are worth considering when:

  • your lawn is close to, or over, the largest rating you can find;
  • the property is split into separate areas, such as a front lawn and a back field divided by a driveway or buildings;
  • part of the property is heavily shaded and the rest is open, so the two areas suit different kinds of navigation.

With boundary-wire mowers there’s also a hard limit: PCWorld notes that wires top out at roughly 1,000 to 2,500 feet depending on the model, so a large property may need more than one mower regardless of rated area.

A middle path

Some owners of large properties use a robot for the lawn around the house, where tidiness matters most, and keep a riding mower or a service for the far edges and rough ground. A robot doesn’t have to do everything to be worth having.

Questions

Can a robot mower do 2 acres?

Not with any single mower covered here. The largest stated rating among them is 1.5 acres, on the Segway Navimow X450. For two acres of grass, plan on two mowers working separate areas, or a robot for part of the lawn and another method for the rest.

Will one robot mower cover my front and back lawns?

Yes, if the two areas together fit within its rating and it can drive between them. Most wire-free mowers let you map several zones. Add the areas together when you compare sizes, and check the route between them for gravel, steps or narrow gaps.

Do large-lawn robot mowers need a strong phone signal?

Many wire-free models use cellular or internet connections for positioning corrections and app control. Segway says the X4 series may be limited where the network signal is weak. If parts of your property have poor reception, check with the manufacturer before buying.

Hills as well as acreage?

On big properties, slopes are often what decides between these mowers. Our slope guide covers the all-wheel-drive models in detail.
