Robot Mowers That Cut Low Enough for Bermuda Grass

Updated 8-minute read

Quick answer

Bermuda has the opposite problem to St. Augustine: it needs cutting low. Texas A&M and the University of Georgia both recommend 1 to 2 inches for home bermuda lawns. Plenty of robot mowers bottom out at 1.5 to 2 inches or higher, leaving no room for the low end of that range. The strongest fits are the Segway Navimow X430, stated range 0.75 to 4 inches, the standard (non-H) Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD at 1.0 to 2.7 inches, and for small yards the standard Mammotion YUKA mini 2 at 0.8 to 2.4 inches. Avoid the “H” versions of the Mammotion models. They’re built for tall grass and can’t cut below 2 inches.

Bermuda is the grass of Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, the Carolinas and much of the Sun Belt. It’s tough, fast-growing and heat-loving, and it looks best kept short and dense. That makes it close to ideal for a robot mower that cuts a little every day, as long as the mower can actually cut low enough.

This guide gives you the recommended heights from two university extension services, compares stated cutting ranges, and names the mowers that suit bermuda. MowReview quotes no prices and hasn’t tested these mowers. How we research explains why.

How low bermuda should be cut

Texas A&M’s AggieTurf program recommends a mowing height of 1 to 2 inches for bermudagrass home lawns with a rotary mower, mowed weekly. University of Georgia extension gives the same 1 to 2 inches. Both sit alongside the rule that applies to every lawn: take no more than a third of the leaf blade at a time.

That rule is the whole reason bermuda and robot mowers suit each other. At 1.5 inches, a weekly push mower has to catch bermuda before it reaches 2.25 inches, and in a Texas June, bermuda grows faster than that. A robot mower cutting daily takes a fraction off each time and keeps the lawn at height without scalping.

Why the lower limit matters more than the upper one

Almost every robot mower cuts high enough for bermuda. The question is how low it goes. A mower whose minimum is 2 inches can only keep bermuda at the very top of its recommended range, which tends to look open and stemmy. A minimum of 1 inch or lower gives you the full range to work with.

Don’t buy the H

Mammotion’s “H” models are designed for tall grasses like St. Augustine and cut 2.0 to 4 inches. On a bermuda lawn that’s the wrong way round. Make sure the listing states the lower range: 1.0 to 2.7 inches for the LUBA 3 AWD, 0.8 to 2.4 inches for the YUKA mini 2.

The picks

Best for steep or multi-zone bermuda yards

Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (standard version)

  • Stated cutting height1.0 to 2.7 in
  • Stated max slope80%
  • Stated zonesUp to 30 (3000 model)

The standard LUBA 3 AWD’s range sits almost exactly on bermuda’s recommended range. TechRadar found its multi-zone mapping worked well and praised its climbing, and EasyLawnMowing found it handled a long route between separate lawns over gravel and ramps without complaint.

Good for

  • Bermuda kept between 1 and 2 inches
  • Sloped lots and front-and-back yard setups

Less good for

  • Interrupted jobs: EasyLawnMowing found an interrupted task may restart from 0% rather than resuming
  • Patient app users only: TechRadar reported occasional connectivity problems and interface quirks that made zone setup tedious
  • Shady patches, where TechRadar found the front tires could damage turf

Best for small bermuda yards

Mammotion YUKA mini 2 (standard version)

  • Stated cutting height0.8 to 2.4 in
  • Stated coverageAbout 0.25 acre
  • Stated max slope45%

A compact LiDAR mower whose range reaches below bermuda’s recommended minimum. EasyLawnMowing found it kept to narrow paths cleanly and detected low objects such as a glove and a small ball, which is useful in a family yard.

Good for

  • Small suburban bermuda lawns up to about a quarter acre
  • Tight yards with narrow side passages

Less good for

  • Changing height from the app: EasyLawnMowing notes height is set manually and can’t differ per zone
  • Larger lots, where it will fall behind in peak summer growth
  • Remote monitoring away from Wi-Fi without buying the separate 4G module

What else bermuda asks of a robot mower

Summer growth rate

Bermuda grows fastest in exactly the heat that makes mowing miserable, so the mower needs enough capacity to keep up in June and July. Size it with room to spare. A mower rated only just above your lawn area will fall behind in peak growth. What size do you need shows how to measure.

Low cuts and uneven ground

The lower you cut, the more every bump and dip shows up as a scalped patch. Bermuda’s low recommended height makes a level lawn more important than for most grasses. Fill dips and knock down high spots before setting the mower to its lowest heights.

Runners into beds and paths

Bermuda spreads aggressively by runners into flower beds and across path edges. A robot mower won’t fix that. It keeps the lawn short but leaves the edges to you, so plan on an edger or trimmer, or hard edging along beds.

Shade

Texas A&M lists shade tolerance as a weakness of bermuda. The upside for a robot mower owner is that bermuda lawns tend to be open and sunny, which suits satellite navigation. Where trees do shade part of the lawn, expect thinner turf there and a slower mower. Robot mowers for yards with trees covers the navigation side.

Winter dormancy

Bermuda goes brown and dormant in winter across most of its range. The mower should stop when the grass does. Winter storage covers putting it away.

Questions

What height should a robot mower cut bermuda grass?

Texas A&M’s AggieTurf program and University of Georgia extension both recommend 1 to 2 inches for bermuda home lawns. A robot mower whose minimum is 1 inch or lower gives you the whole range to work with.

Which robot mowers can cut bermuda below 1.5 inches?

From the models compared here: the Segway Navimow X430 (stated minimum 0.75 in), the standard Mammotion YUKA mini 2 (0.8 in), the standard Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (1.0 in) and the Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR (1.2 in). The Mammotion H versions start at 2.0 inches or higher.

Should I buy the Mammotion H version for bermuda?

No. The H versions are built for tall grasses and start at 2.0 inches on the YUKA mini 2 and 2.2 inches on the LUBA 3 AWD, which is at or above the top of bermuda’s recommended range. Buy the standard version.

Is a robot mower good for bermuda grass?

It’s one of the best matches. Bermuda looks best kept short and grows fast in summer, which makes the one-third rule hard to keep with weekly mowing. A robot mower cutting a little each day keeps it at height without scalping, as long as it can cut low enough.

Will a robot mower scalp my bermuda lawn?

Not through overgrowth, because it cuts frequently. Scalping on a robot-mown bermuda lawn almost always comes from uneven ground: high spots get scalped at low settings. Level the lawn before running the mower at its lowest heights.

Will a robot mower stop bermuda spreading into my flower beds?

No. It keeps the lawn itself short but doesn’t stop runners creeping into beds or over path edges. Hard edging or regular trimming is still needed.

The short version

Bermuda wants 1 to 2 inches, so check a mower’s minimum height before anything else. The Navimow X430 suits bigger lots, the standard LUBA 3 AWD suits slopes and split yards, and the standard YUKA mini 2 suits small lawns. Avoid the Mammotion H versions, level the lawn before cutting low, and size the mower for June growth rather than April.

Got St. Augustine instead?

It needs the opposite: a mower that cuts high. The model choice changes completely.
