Best Robot Mowers for Small Yards

Updated 6-minute read

Quick answer

For a small lawn, buy the smallest mower that comfortably covers it and spend the savings on navigation that handles tight corners. The Segway Navimow i105N (1/8 acre) and i110N (1/4 acre) are the strongest wire-free options PCWorld has tested at this size. Bob Vila named the Sunseeker S4 its best pick for small yards, and Consumer Reports recommends the Gardena Sileno Minimo for the smallest lawns.

Small yards are the easiest kind of lawn to shop for and the easiest to get wrong. Buying a mower rated for half an acre to cut a tenth of an acre costs a lot more and solves nothing, because on a small lot the problem is almost never coverage. It’s the flower beds, the narrow side gate, the patio edge and the corner behind the shed.

MowReview hasn’t tested these mowers. Specifications come from the manufacturers, test observations belong to the testers we name, and every pick includes a genuine drawback.

What actually matters on a small lawn

  • Physical size. A compact mower gets into corners a big one has to skip. Measure your narrowest gap, such as a side gate, before anything else.
  • Edges. A short lawn is nearly all edge, so how close a mower cuts to a wall or bed makes a visible difference.
  • Obstacles. Small yards pack in beds, ornaments, furniture and hoses, so obstacle handling matters more than raw power.
  • Coverage, last. Any mower on this page can finish a small lawn easily.

Bob Vila’s pick for small yards

Sunseeker S4

  • Stated lawn size0.25 acre
  • Stated slope42% (23°)

Bob Vila named the S4 its best pick for small yards after testing seven mowers on a Florida property. Its slope rating is higher than the Navimow i-series, which makes it the better bet if your small lawn has a noticeable rise.

Good for

  • Small lawns with a moderate slope
  • Buyers who want an independent tester’s pick at this size

Less good for

  • Steeper sections: Bob Vila found its small front wheels struggled on the steeper parts of the test property
  • Buyers who care about styling: the same tester found the design dated

Consumer Reports’ pick for small yards

Gardena Sileno Minimo

  • Consumer Reports recommends it forLawns up to 2,613 sq ft

Consumer Reports named the Sileno Minimo its top robotic mower for small yards. Note that its recommended lawn size is smaller than Gardena’s own claimed coverage, which is a useful reminder that box figures are best cases. At 2,613 square feet, this is for genuinely small lawns.

Good for

  • Compact, enclosed lawns
  • Buyers who trust an independent lab over a spec sheet

Less good for

  • Anyone avoiding installation work: it’s a boundary-wire mower, so a wire goes around the lawn
  • Lawns above about 2,600 square feet

Is a robot mower worth it for a small lawn?

It’s a fair question, because a small lawn doesn’t take long to mow. The honest answer is that it depends on what you’re buying. If it’s time, the saving on a small lawn is modest. If it’s not having to do it at all, especially if bending, pushing or the heat make mowing hard, a small lawn is exactly where a robot mower fits best. There’s more on this in our guide to whether robot mowers are worth it.

Don’t buy on coverage alone

On a small lot, a mower that’s physically too large will skip corners no matter how generous its lawn size rating. Measure your narrowest passage and compare it with the mower’s width before you compare anything else.

Questions

Is a robot mower worth it for a small yard?

If your reason is saving time, the gain on a small lawn is modest. If your reason is not having to mow at all, because of your back, your knees or the heat, a small lawn is where a robot mower is easiest to justify, and the mowers are cheaper at this size.

How small is too small for a robot mower?

There’s no minimum size, but very small lawns tend to be full of obstacles, and a mower needs room to turn and a sensible spot for its charging station. If your lawn is only a few strips of grass between paths and beds, check the mower’s width against your narrowest gap first.

Should I buy a bigger mower than I need, just in case?

Leave some margin above your measured lawn, but don’t jump several sizes. A much larger mower costs more, is heavier to handle and is physically bigger, which is a real disadvantage in a small yard with tight corners.

Measure before you choose

On a small lot, the numbers that matter are your grass area and your narrowest gap. Both take ten minutes.
