Quick answer
For standard St. Augustine (Floratam, Palmetto, Raleigh, BitterBlue and similar), University of Florida IFAS recommends mowing at 3.5 to 4 inches. Most robot mowers can’t go that high. The two that reach 4 inches on paper are the Segway Navimow X430, stated range 0.75 to 4 inches, and the “H” versions of the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD, stated range 2.2 to 4 inches. The standard LUBA 3 AWD tops out at 2.7 inches, so the version you buy matters. For dwarf cultivars such as Seville and CitraBlue, which UF/IFAS puts at 2 to 3 inches, many more mowers qualify, including the Mammotion YUKA mini 2 H.
St. Augustine is the lawn grass of Florida, the Gulf Coast and much of coastal Texas, and it’s the grass robot mower marketing understands least. Nearly every spec sheet lists a cutting height range. Nearly none explains that the most common St. Augustine cultivars want the lawn kept taller than most of those ranges reach.
This guide gives you the target heights from the University of Florida, shows which mowers reach them and which don’t, and flags the model-name trap that catches buyers out. As always, MowReview quotes no prices and hasn’t tested these mowers. Specs come from manufacturers and retailers, and drawbacks from independent hands-on reviewers. How we research explains why.
How high St. Augustine should be cut

UF/IFAS explains why height matters. Mowing too short increases stress, discourages deep roots, raises the risk of scalping and may make the lawn more prone to pests. It also repeats the one-third rule: remove no more than a third of the leaf blade at any mowing.
Good news for robot mowers
The same UF/IFAS publication notes that lower heights are acceptable with robotic mowers, because they remove small amounts frequently rather than scalping the lawn once a week. So a mower that tops out a little below 3.5 inches isn’t automatically ruled out. But the closer it gets to the recommended height, the more margin you have in summer heat and drought, which is when a short-cut St. Augustine lawn suffers most.
Which mowers reach the height
| Mower | Stated range | Standard St. Augustine (3.5–4 in)? |

| Mammotion YUKA mini 2 standard | 0.8 to 2.4 in | No |
Figures from manufacturer pages, retailer listings and the reviews cited below. Check the exact model number before you buy.
The model-name trap
Mammotion sells the same mower in two cutting-height versions. On the LUBA 3 AWD, a model number ending in “H” (1500H, 3000H, 5000H) cuts 2.2 to 4 inches. The same model without the H cuts 1.0 to 2.7 inches. The YUKA mini 2 works the same way: 0.8 to 2.4 inches standard, 2.0 to 3.5 on the H. On a St. Augustine lawn, buying the non-H version by mistake is the most expensive mistake you can make, because the mower physically can’t reach the height your grass needs. Check that the listing title includes the H and states 2.2–4.0 inches.
The picks
Best for larger or sloped St. Augustine lawns
Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD (H version)
- Stated cutting height (H)2.2 to 4 in
- Stated max slope80%
- Navigation360° LiDAR, network RTK, AI vision
The H version is built for taller grass, and it reaches the full UF/IFAS range for standard cultivars. It’s sold in several coverage sizes: retailers list the 1500H at about 0.37 acre and the 3000H at about 0.75 acre. TechRadar’s hands-on review praised its build and hill-climbing, and EasyLawnMowing found it reliably detected small objects such as a football and a dog toy.
Good for
- Standard St. Augustine cultivars kept at 3.5 to 4 inches
- Larger lots, slopes and lawns split into several zones
Less good for
- Shady St. Augustine: TechRadar found the front tires can damage grass in shady areas, especially when turning
- Muddy summers: the same review noted the front wheels collect a lot of mud
- Buyers who don’t check the model number: the non-H version stops at 2.7 inches
For small lots with dwarf St. Augustine
Mammotion YUKA mini 2 (H version)
- Stated cutting height (H)2.0 to 3.5 in
- Stated coverageAbout 0.25 acre
- Stated max slope45%
Its range covers the dwarf cultivars comfortably. Seville at 2 to 2.5 inches and CitraBlue at 2 to 3 inches both sit well inside it, which suits the smaller lots dwarf St. Augustine is often planted on. EasyLawnMowing’s review found it tracked narrow paths cleanly and avoided low objects well.
Good for
- Seville, CitraBlue and other dwarf cultivars
- Small, tight lots up to about a quarter acre
Less good for
- Standard St. Augustine: 3.5 inches is the very top of its range, with no margin
- Adjusting height from the app: EasyLawnMowing notes height is set manually and can’t differ per zone
- Remote monitoring away from Wi-Fi: the 4G module is sold separately on some versions
Other things St. Augustine asks of a mower
Thick, spongy turf
St. Augustine grows coarse, dense stolons (runners) that form a springy mat. A light mower with small wheels can sink into it slightly, which lowers the effective cutting height. That’s another reason to leave a margin above your target rather than running a mower at the very top of its range.
Shade
St. Augustine is often grown under oaks because it tolerates shade better than bermuda. Shade makes two things harder: satellite navigation under a canopy, and turf that is thinner and easier to damage by turning wheels. Our guide to robot mowers for yards with trees covers navigation under a canopy.
Wet summers
Florida and Gulf Coast summers are wet, and a soft, soaked lawn marks easily under repeated wheel traffic. Keep the schedule to the drier part of the day and let the mower pause in heavy rain. Robot mowers in the rain explains why.
Year-round mowing
UF/IFAS notes that St. Augustine needs weekly mowing through the growing season and less in the cooler months, and that north Florida lawns may not need mowing through winter dormancy. In south Florida, expect the mower to work most of the year, which matters for blade and battery wear. Robot mower maintenance sets out the routine.
For the agronomy side, robot mowers on St. Augustine and bermuda goes deeper. If part of your property is bermuda, which needs cutting much lower, see robot mowers for bermuda grass.
Questions
What height should a robot mower cut St. Augustine grass?
University of Florida IFAS recommends 3.5 to 4 inches for standard cultivars such as Floratam, Palmetto and Raleigh, 2 to 2.5 inches for Seville and 2 to 3 inches for CitraBlue. It also notes that robot mowers can run a little lower, because they remove small amounts frequently.
Can a robot mower cut St. Augustine at 4 inches?
Some can. The Segway Navimow X430 has a stated range of 0.75 to 4 inches, and the H versions of the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD are listed at 2.2 to 4 inches. Many other robot mowers stop around 3.5 to 3.6 inches or lower.
What is the difference between the LUBA 3 AWD and LUBA 3 AWD H?
Cutting height. Retailer listings put the standard LUBA 3 AWD at 1.0 to 2.7 inches and the H versions, such as the 1500H and 3000H, at 2.2 to 4.0 inches. For standard St. Augustine you need the H version.
Is it bad to cut St. Augustine too short?
Yes. UF/IFAS says mowing too low increases stress, discourages deep roots, raises the risk of scalping and may increase pest problems. It also recommends removing no more than a third of the leaf blade at any one mowing.
Will a robot mower work on dwarf St. Augustine like Seville or CitraBlue?
Much more easily. With recommended heights of 2 to 2.5 inches for Seville and 2 to 3 inches for CitraBlue, dwarf cultivars fall inside the cutting range of most robot mowers, including the Mammotion YUKA mini 2 H at 2.0 to 3.5 inches.
Do robot mowers struggle with thick St. Augustine?
They can sink slightly into the dense, springy turf, which lowers the effective cutting height, and the turf marks easily under turning wheels in shade. TechRadar found the LUBA 3 AWD’s front tires could damage grass in shady areas. Leaving a margin above your target height and avoiding wet-day mowing both help.
The short version
Standard St. Augustine wants 3.5 to 4 inches, and only a few robot mowers reach 4. The Navimow X430 does it without any special version. The LUBA 3 AWD does it only in its H versions, so check the model number. Dwarf cultivars are far easier, and a compact mower like the YUKA mini 2 H covers them on smaller lots. Whatever you buy, leave a margin above your target height, keep it off soaked summer ground, and expect it to work most of the year in south Florida.
Height is one number. Size and slope are the others.
Once you know a mower cuts high enough, check that it suits your lawn’s area and steepest slope.
